Afghanistan is the greatest challenge that we face in the Post Cold War period. Complicating this already difficult mission is conducting operations there with a conglomeration of forty-three nations. Some of these are Coalition partners, while others are NATO Allies. In fact, the ISAF mission itself is under the leadership of NATO. This brings with it a level of complexity and inefficiency that compounds this already challenging undertaking. Many on the US side of the debate are quick to point the finger at NATO as the culprit for many of their woes. This response is not helpful. To remedy this NATO, and its most influential member, the US, must undertake a concerted effort to identify these challenges, provide realistic solutions and implement every one. All are achievable if they work together and to do less is fraught with peril.
