The first, City of Memory, touches on Pacheco's major literary obsessions: the destructive effects of time; the essential egotism and cruelty of the natural world, with humankind at its violent center; and the capacity of the human spirit to achieve transcendence. The second, I watch the Earth, is an emotional catharsis, the poet's mediation on the tragic earthquake that devastated his native Mexico City in 1985. One of Mexico's foremost writers, Pacheco (b. 1939) divides his time between the University of Maryland and Mexico's National Institute of History and Anthropology. José Emilio Pacheco (Ciudad de México, 1939-2014) publicó sus primeros cuentos en La sangre de Medusa, libro al que siguieron El viento distante y El principio del placer. Dentro de su obra narrativa destacan Morirás lejos y Las batallas en el desierto, un long seller desde su lanzamiento. Su obra poética, que comenzó con Los elementos de la noche y El reposo del fuego, no tiene parangón e incluye ya catorce poemarios reunidos en dos antologías. Destacada es, así mismo, su labor como ensayista, en particular en «Inventario», columna publicada a lo largo de cuatro décadas en la que confluyen lo literario y lo periodístico, fundamental para comprender la cultura de México y del mundo. Sus traducciones de Beckett, Wilde, Tennessee Williams o T.S. Elliot, por mencionar algunas, nos acercan a los referentes de la literatura universal. Recibió, entre otros, los premios José Asunción Silva 1996, José Donoso 2001, Octavio Paz 2003, Ramón López Velarde 2003, Pablo Neruda 2004, Alfonso Reyes 2004, Reina Sofía 2009 y Premio Cervantes 2009.
