This book explores the moral, cultural, and institutional meanings of vulnerability in contemporary life. Vulnerability has become a word of remarkable reach and too often is framed as a problem to be solved, a deficit to be managed, or a category for those ‘in need’. Yet to live as a human being is already to be vulnerable - to be dependent, exposed, and capable of being affected. Treating vulnerability as an integrative moral category, the book argues that to take vulnerability seriously is to rethink what it means to be ethical, to be just, and to be human. The analysis reveals how contemporary cultures resist or distort fragility - how ideals of autonomy, performance, and invulnerability mask our interdependence. It also proposes vulnerability as a constructive principle for reimagining institutions of care, justice, and governance. The chapters include case studies of the Catholic Church and of child protection systems. The authors center on a humane ethics, an ethics that begins not from control but from relation and is grounded in shared vulnerability. They argue that to unveil vulnerability is to resist the moral exhaustion of our age.
