With some antiquated (and some not so antiquated) materia medica of sorts within its pages, it is notable for its illustrations as much as its recipes. It is also a fairly good symbol of its era- that of late pre-modern medicine and its fusion of standardization and experimentation with herbal and physical compounds often used for hundreds of years or longer before the 19th century began.
