$ 86.013You have heard that someone got rich on bitcoin. You have also heard that someone lost their savings. Then you open a trading app, a wall of coin names, percentages and candlesticks comes at you, and you can read none of it.
This book is for that moment. It assumes you know nothing beyond the word "bitcoin," and it never asks you to buy anything.
Understanding Cryptocurrency works through the subject across twenty-seven chapters and five appendices, in plain language and with original diagrams. It begins with what a cryptocurrency actually is, and the several things people wrongly believe it is. It explains how a blockchain keeps a ledger that nobody owns, what a wallet really holds (not coins), why a confirmed transfer cannot be taken back, and what mining and staking are actually for.
It then sorts a market of thousands into four kinds, using one specimen of each: bitcoin, the one they call digital gold; ether, which is more than a coin; the stablecoin that claims not to move; and the meme coin that runs on mood. It explains what the thousands of others mostly are.
The second half is about how things go wrong, because that is where most readers’ money goes. A full catalogue of the frauds, organised by the pattern underneath rather than the story on top. The routes by which coins actually disappear. How stable a stablecoin really is, and the chain of conditions that word rests on. Why this market carries people away, and what leverage does to an ordinary person. Regulation and tax across several jurisdictions, offered as a map rather than a rulebook.
What this book does not do matters as much as what it does. It recommends no coin and opposes none. It forecasts no price and promises no return. It does not teach you to open an account, place an order, use leverage, farm yield, claim an airdrop, or issue a token. Frauds are described only as far as recognising them. The four coins named throughout were chosen as the clearest example of each category, and naming one is neither endorsement nor warning.
The appendices are built to be used after the reading: a vocabulary quick reference with a column most glossaries leave out, namely what people wrongly think each term means; a side-by-side table of the four categories; a checklist for recognising fraud; a checklist for keeping coins safe; and a short page of what is worth remembering if you remember nothing else.
Whether you end up buying cryptocurrency or never touching it, the aim is the same: that you can look at this market and understand what you are seeing, rather than either believing all of it or dismissing all of it.
This book is educational. It is not investment, tax, or legal advice. Cryptocurrency is extremely risky, and any money put into it may be lost entirely.
