Reseña del libro "The Nuragic Civilization: Sardinia's Stone Towers and the Shardana Question (en Inglés)"

Seven thousand stone towers stand on one Mediterranean island—built without a spoonful of mortar, most still standing after three thousand years—by a people who never wrote a word. They are called nuraghi, and there is nothing like them anywhere else in the ancient world: corbelled cones of dry-laid basalt, some over fifteen metres tall, one for every three square kilometres of Sardinia. They were raised between roughly 1800 and 1000 BC by a society that left no tablet, no inscription, not one readable sentence. Everything we know has to be read from stone, bronze, and other people’s records. And other people did notice them—perhaps. Egyptian scribes of the thirteenth and twelfth centuries BC recorded a people called the Shardana: sea raiders on the Nile Delta, then elite mercenaries in the pharaoh’s own guard at Kadesh, and finally a named contingent among the Sea Peoples at Medinet Habu. The Egyptians drew them with horned helmets, round shields, and long straight swords. Bronze figurines from Nuragic Sardinia show warriors with horned helmets, round shields, and long straight swords—and the name Shardana sounds like Sardinia. The argument has run since the nineteenth century. This book argues the case for and the case against, each at full strength—then leaves the verdict open, because the evidence does not settle it. It is the strongest surviving candidate in the Sea Peoples mystery, and it deserves better than manufactured certainty. Then there is Mont’e Prama. In 1974 a farmer’s plough struck carved stone, and out of that field came over-lifesize statues—boxers, archers, warriors, with staring concentric-circle eyes—from a culture nobody suspected of monumental sculpture. They had been deliberately smashed and buried, nothing like them exists in the prehistoric western Mediterranean, and the site is only partly excavated. What you’ll learn: How a dry-stone tower is engineered to stand for three millennia—and what seven thousand of them say about their builders The unresolved argument over what the towers were for: fortress, residence, store, temple, or all of them across eight centuries The bronzetti—hundreds of small bronze self-portraits, the best evidence anywhere for how a textless people saw themselves The Cypriot copper ingots found on Sardinia, and the island’s place inside the Bronze Age trade network The full Egyptian record of the Shardana, from the Delta raids to Kadesh to the Sea Peoples reliefs The Mont’e Prama statues: the discovery, the dating controversy, and the deliberate destruction What reached Sardinia when the Bronze Age world collapsed around 1200 BC—and what carried on This book is for you if: The Sea Peoples and the Late Bronze Age collapse are the ancient mystery you keep coming back to You want lost-civilization history built from real archaeology, with the reasoning shown and the limits marked You’ve seen Sardinia’s towers—or plan to—and want the story no guidebook tells You’d rather know what is known and what is argued than be handed an answer nobody actually has A civilisation that built more than it wrote—and the open question that has followed it for 160 years.
