Para Isaac Asimov era "el adivino más atinado del futuro". Arthur C. Clarke (16 de diciembre de 1917, Minehead - 19 de mazo de 2008, Colombo, Sri Lanka) Escritor y científico inglés trabajó como auditor educativo tras graduarse. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se especializó en radar en la RAF y, después, estudió Matemáticas y Física en el King’s College de Londres.

Fue presidente de la Sociedad Interplanetaria Británica y editor asistente en Science Abstracts antes de dedicarse por completo a la escritura en 1951. Vivió en Sri Lanka desde 1956 hasta su muerte. Varias de sus obras, como 2001: Una odisea del espacio, fueron adaptadas al cine con gran éxito.

Galardonado como Caballero del Imperio Británico, también recibió premios como el Nébula, el Hugo (dos veces) y el Locus. Escribió tanto libros científicos como de ciencia ficción, destacando 2001 (y sus secuelas), Cita con Rama, Las arenas de Marte y Cánticos de la lejana Tierra, entre otros.
