Sylvia Plath (Boston, 1932–Londres, 1963) fue una de las grandes poetas y escritoras estadounidenses del siglo XX. Estudió en Smith College y en la Universidad de Cambridge, donde conoció al poeta Ted Hughes. Su obra, reconocida por una voz intensa y una extraordinaria precisión literaria, exploró la identidad, las expectativas sociales, la maternidad y la experiencia de la crisis personal. Publicó The Colossus en vida y Ariel de manera póstuma; en 1982 recibió el Premio Pulitzer de Poesía por The Collected Poems.

La campana de cristal, publicada en 1963 bajo el seudónimo de Victoria Lucas, fue su única novela. La protagonista, Esther Greenwood, es una joven talentosa que llega a Nueva York para trabajar en una revista y poco a poco se siente incapaz de encontrar un lugar propio en el mundo que la rodea.
