A black Baptist Pastor in a fictional village in North Carolina, whose life has been told since from his African ancestry to his deathbed, including his passion for music and interaction with black musicians; the daily life of his parish involving racial segregation, sexual abuse and pedophilia; a wife who dies as a result of poor care in a racist hospital; his struggle to raise the child without the mother; his friendship and (fictitious) encounters with pastor Adam Daniel Williams and Pastor King (grandfather and father of Martin Luther King, Jr.); their participation in the struggle for civil rights; his friendship with Theodore, a white, singular, and benevolent Catholic priest, with whom he plays chess weekly, while building togheter, from the gardens of their respective churches, a lasting peace for the social and racial conflicts of the region (hook for the name of the book)...
