The 21st century presents humanity with unprecedented challenges and opportunities, from climate change and global health crises to the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and data science. At the heart of addressing these complex issues lies STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. However, the traditional methods of teaching STEM in higher education are no longer sufficient. We are witnessing a paradigm shift, moving from passive, lecture-based instruction to active, student-centered, and inclusive pedagogies that foster deep conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and the ability to apply knowledge to real-world problems. This book, STEM Learning in Higher Education: STEM Excellence, STEM Service Learning & Transforming Undergraduate STEM Education, is born out of a conviction that we must transform how we educate the next generation of scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and innovators. It is a response to the urgent calls from national and international bodies to improve retention, equity, and the quality of STEM graduates. Drawing on the latest research and best practices, this volume provides a comprehensive framework for educators, administrators, and curriculum designers who are committed to this transformation. The book is structured around three core themes: STEM Excellence, which challenges us to define and achieve high achievement for all students; STEM Service Learning, which bridges the gap between theory and practice by engaging students in meaningful community partnerships; and Transforming Undergraduate STEM Education, which calls for a holistic overhaul of our curricula, pedagogies, and assessment methods. Throughout these pages, we integrate high-level mathematical reasoning—from calculus and linear algebra to discrete mathematics, graph theory, and abstract algebra—to illustrate how these foundational disciplines underpin all STEM fields and how they can be taught in more engaging and context-rich ways.
