spread spectrum is the technology at the core of cdma and is a basic platform for numerous systems already in operation and proposed for the future. traditionally, spread spectrum has been used in military applications but is now successfully deployed in various areas of information science and technology. it is widely applied in systems used for collecting and recovering data such as radar, navigation, environmental surveys, etc., and to telecommunication systems and networks such as 2g, 3g and beyond, mobile radio, wireless and fiber-optic lan, digital radio and tv broadcasting to name a few. for decades now, the well-known advantages of spread spectrum and cdma, such as jamming immunity, high information security, propagation effects, resistance, soft blocking in multi-user environment and many more, have been almost exclusively exploited by the military and other special services. however, since the early 90s, due to the rapid progress in electronic circuit technology, spread spectrum and cdma have also had considerable commercial appeal and their first milestone was their use in the deployment of 2g is-95 mobile telephone networks. today, almost any viable project of future wireless data collection or transmission system rests on spread spectrum technology and it is highly likely that over the coming years preamble spread spectrum will become unnecessary since conventional (narrow-band) systems will be completely replaced by spread spectrum (higher bandwidth) ones. therefore, a sound fundamental knowledge of these techniques is of paramount importance for all students and practicing engineers in the field to equip themselves for the fast evolving future technologies.
