Reseña del libro "Run Away to Glory: Helen's Story (en Inglés)"

"Run Away to Glory-Helen's Story" This book brings alive the heroism, heartbreak, and joy surrounding the "Underground Railroad" in the 1800s. Authors, Holt and Palm show how Vermont farmers, Helen and Joshua Haskell, at considerable risk to themselves, lead runaways to safe houses on their way north to freedom. Although the main characters are fictional, the novel is based on solid history. Helen and Joshua talk about real people, real places and real historical events that took place in the 1800s. In-depth research took over 6 years, so the authors could show the terrible treatment slaves endured in captivity as well as bringing to life the many heroes of the past. Besides following the runaways on their turbulent journeys, there are numerous intriguing subplots. For example, young Vermont farm girls leave home to work in cotton mills in Massachusetts. These "factory girls" some as young as 15, tell of horrendous working conditions as they spin that same cotton, picked by southern slaves, into cloth on their power looms. Another locale is in Fairhaven, MA. Two runaway slaves are befriended by Cape Verdean dock workers before finding refuge in a hidden room (almost identical to a room in a farmhouse belonging to the authors' Grandmother.) They are then transported by carriage to find refuge in a Gypsy camp in North Fairhaven. Don't miss the riveting court trial that takes place with evidence stacked against one of the main characters. You'll also be introduced to the temptress, Abigail, and the trouble she brings to Helen and Joshua's family. The book is gripping and may bring tears to your eyes but it is also sprinkled with lighter and quite often laughable moments. "Run Away to Glory" is a story of unsung heroes, of both races, some who gave their life for acting out their convictions. You'll see the struggle for the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness-so long forbidden for those in servitude. This compelling and heart-warming book includes more than 30 photos and illustrations. Both soft bound and Kindle are available on Amazon,
