Adolescence is often referred to as the period of storm and stress and this is one source of apprehension for parents. In a traditional society like India, earlier this stage was not given much importance and this stage just passed like any other. Mostly parents decided what was good for their children and obedience was the norm. Now the world has become a global village. Adolescents are aware of what is happening all over the world and are aware of the life, freedom and choices enjoyed by their counterparts elsewhere. Parents now become confused as to what extent they should give freedom to their adolescents. The problems highlighted by media about internet and face book related abuse, mobile phone use and abuse, teenage suicides all add to their woe. At times like this they look up to psychologists for guidance and it becomes the responsibility of the psychologists to intervene to study problems of concern to society in a systematic manner and offer appropriate guidance. 1.2 Parenting Parenting is the process of promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood, and it refers to the aspects of raising a child aside from the biological relationship. Furthermore, it's a kind of rearing that teaches them to be a self-reliant individual to lead an independent life. Unfortunately the "biological relationship" makes many parents possessive, and moulds their offspring to a clone of their alike or a version of their dream or aspirations. This irony in parental care forces one to explore what are the perceptional differences in parenting, and finally understanding what is effective parenting. Parenting may be defined as purposive activities aimed at ensuring the survival and development of children. It derives from the Latin verb "par ere"-To bring forth, develop, or educate. The word parenting from its root is more concerned with the activity of educating and developing than who does it. Parenting processes can be defined as activities that are specifically aimed at promoting the child's welfare.
