Going beyond the boundaries of the discipline, the history of the collection reflects key political events and developments as well as demonstrating the special significance of the museum as a lifeline and gateway to the world during the years of the East German regime. Based on her personal memories, Blumenthal's account expands upon existing works on the history of the museum, with the inclusion of numerous snapshots of everyday life, not to mention the diverse nuances of subjective experience. The work is completed by a range of formerly unpublished photographs, a detailed register of persons, bibliographical references, contemporary documents and Blumenthal's own personal memories of the fall of the Wall on November 9th. Uber die Grenzen der Fachrichtung hinaus spiegelt die Historie der Sammlung die entscheidenden politischen Situationen und Entwicklungen wider und zeigt die besondere Bedeutung des Museums unter dem DDR-Regime als Rettungsanker und Tor zur Welt.
