These trends are resulting in the internationalisation of markets and the rapid development of new technologies, creating a complex and flexible working environment that constantly presents employees with new challenges. Education and training are essential for participation in society, as they represent 'the foundation for a successful future and integration' (Microsoft Trendbook 2011, p. 2) and 'significantly determine career prospects and life opportunities' (ibid.).
