Structured around the four Gospel watches - Even, Midnight, Cockcrowing, Morning - it walks through ten disciplines the long-suffering have kept for centuries: lament that does not lie, hours that hold a shape when the days will not, guarding the heart from the particular bitterness that grows in prolonged waiting, tending the body that has to carry all of it, keeping watch with others without pretending the watch is over, reading the dark for what it actually is, and the discipline of hope - the hardest of them, and the one the others exist to protect.

Each discipline ends with a prayer coda you can say when your own words have run out. The back matter gathers an Office - short prayers for the specific hours the dark keeps returning to.
