James Clavell (Sydney, 1921 - Vevey, 1994) fue un autor superventas de novelas épicas e históricas, así como guionista y director en Estados Unidos desde 1953. Clavell es especialmente reconocido por las novelas épicas de su "Asian Saga", entre las que destacan “Shōgun” (1975), “Tai-Pan” (1966), y “El rey de las ratas” (King Rat, 1962).

Además de su trabajo como novelista, Clavell escribió los guiones de una serie de películas aclamadas y también trabajó como director y productor. Vivió muchos años en Vancouver y Los Ángeles, antes de establecerse en Suiza, donde falleció en 1994.
