We learn about the challenges he has faced along the way from being a young medical student who failed his first year of Medicine in the 1950s to his building a large Department of Medicine at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center in the chaotic times of the 1990s. In describing his now over 50 year experience in Medicine, the remarkable changes that have occurred along with the challenges remaining are well portrayed.Dr. Strickland describes his life and personal development and that of his family over a 70 year period. He and his family have experienced the entire spectrum of life's challenges--success and failure, joy and grief, tragedy and reawakening, disappointment and achievement, courage and pain, fun and sadness, forgiveness and growth. We learn about his commitment to remain active professionally in his twilight years and his success in achieving a productive retirement.
