Sometimes in life, situations are not as bad as they appear, and sometimes in life, simple conversations can add clarity and resolve problems. I Got This with Restorative Practices introduces readers to Justice Scales, a fifth grader, who is learning self-control skills to ease his impulses. This week, Ruth Williams Elementary School is celebrating Career Week with various presentations by students and guest speakers. In Mr. Jackson’s class, students will discuss their career interests before the class. So, he has encouraged his students to add their final touches to their oral presentations due this Friday. All at once, this career project triggered a chain reaction of social, emotional, and academic complications for Justice which threw him into a frenzy of anxiety. For starters, he has not started the assignment, and although he perfected his speech to prevent the sensation of nervousness when publicly speaking, an unforeseen dilemma emerges. His presentation takes an unexpected turn that causes hysterical laughter by his classmates resulting in Justice feeling tremendous embarrassment. Overall, I Got This with Restorative Practices is anchored in the restorative practices philosophy to mobilize adolescents to engage in meaningful discussions to work through difficulties with diplomacy and grace. The restorative practices philosophy is not a program. It is not a task that you have to cross off your list of responsibilities to do. It is a philosophy. It is a way of life. It is a culture. It is a mindset.
