This book is about the science and technology of golf balls. Many golfers don’t understand enough about the modern golf ball to choose which ball they should be using. The author has reviewed the US patent literature from Acushnet Company, the maker of Titleist and Pinnacle golf balls, and has summarized the latest developments in golf ball aerodynamics, the various dimple patterns, the composition of the core and the cover, and why these issues are so important for golfers today. No one has ever written a book that summarizes what the original US patent literature teaches us about golf ball science and technology. The latest discoveries, which sometimes may be highly technical in nature, are written in a form and a style that is directed to the average reader. The chapters in Part 1 of the book are arranged according to the golf ball dimple pattern that appears on the surface of the ball. In Part 2 the chapters highlight what the author has learned about all the important golf ball models made by Acushnet Company, e.g., Pro V1, Pro V1x, NXT Tour, NXT Tour S, Pinnacle Soft, etc. This book is also a guide for those of us who collect golf balls as a hobby. Ways to accurately date vintage golf balls are discussed. Photos and useful information about the golf balls in the author’s collection are presented and discussed. The average golfer, the professional golfer, and the collector alike will benefit from reading this book.
