Reconocido ilustrador y autor de novelas gráficas, Kazu Kibuishi nació en Tokio, Japón, en 1978, y se mudo a los Estados Unidos en 1982.

Es autor de la novela gráfica Amuleto, serie que incluirá nueve libros. El guardián de la piedra es el primero.

En 2013 le encargaron las ilustraciones de las nuevas tapas de Harry Potter, creadas para celebrar los 15 años de la publicación del primer libro de la serie.
