Most Chinese-speaking students do not struggle with English essays because of vocabulary or grammar. They struggle because the writing habits they spent a decade building run against what American schools reward: Chinese composition favors gradual build-up, a conclusion held to the end, and persuasion through quotation and consensus; American academic writing demands a thesis in the opening paragraph, one point per paragraph, and specific evidence followed by the writer's own analysis. The first chapter therefore teaches nothing about technique. It dismantles the old template first. Eleven chapters and a closing essay cover mindset, essay structure, argumentation, sentence craft, grammar, citation and academic integrity, the writing process, six common essay types, discipline-specific conventions, creative writing, and the college application essay.
