The ongoing institutional sexual abuse crisis, and the evident failures of Catholic Church governance associated with it, have disillusioned many Catholics. This crisis, coupled with the Church's inadequate response to it, has coalesced the need, felt by many Catholics, for root and branch reform within the Church. This book outlines the basic case for reform. It contends that the existing model of Church governance is broken, resulting in the Church compromising its social license to operate. The loss of legitimacy has left many Catholics feeling marginalized from their own Church, facing as they do, a Church which expresses belief and practice in ways that no longer resonate with the people. This brief book contends that the expression of Catholic belief has to be informed by insights from the physical and social sciences and the Church's model of governance must yield to the participatory nature of 21st century decision-making.
