"You need open heart surgery and you need it soon!" That's what the cardiologist told author Martin Ramsay after what was expected to be a routine heart catherization procedure. He went from thinking he was relatively healthy to having six bypasses in the space of a week. Cabbage Heart is the very personal account of one man's journey through a life-altering experience: suddenly having his chest sawed open and his cardiac plumbing rerouted. The surgery, called the Cardiac Arterial Bypass Graft or CABG ("cabbage") procedure, is a major undertaking. Recovery is long and physically demanding. The emotional turmoil is even more challenging. During his long recovery, Ramsay documented his thoughts, feelings and observations during what was an arduous spiritual odyssey. Ramsay hopes that Cabbage Heart can be helpful to those who are facing a similar turn-your-world-upside-down changes.
