This collection of 25 short, accessible essays is designed to be a reader for college courses in the humanities and social sciences. That is: Introduction to theory courses in a variety of disciplines; a wide range of courses in cultural studies and popular culture; special topics courses that involve the use of cultural theory of many kinds. The focus of this book is to empower students to bring together theory and practice. Students are shown how to apply sophisticated theories to their own lives as a way to produce meaningful explorations of contemporary society. Each essay: 1) selects and explains a particular idea of cultural theory, 2) applies that idea in an analysis of current social circumstances or popular culture, and 3) discusses why such an analysis is important to understand. To spark student interest, each piece offers provocative arguments on intriguing topics.
