Reseña del libro "Addiction: Is it right for you?: A companion book for functional addicts and users (en Inglés)"
This book is about living your life as an addict (or dedicated user), which is difficult for a lot of reasons, because addiction sucks. Another thing that sucks is society and non-addicts' views on addiction... addicts get very little sympathy unless they express a desire to change their ways. Despite the popular view of addiction as a life-destroying condition, many people manage to live their lives as functioning addicts (i.e. habitual substance users who experience negative consequences due their use but are functional enough to be able to keep living this way for the foreseeable future). The question in this book's title is meant to introduce the almost taboo idea that addiction can be viewed as a choice (and that it is your right to make that choice). Those who reject the notion that addiction is right for them might benefit from learning the standard techniques for dealing with addiction such as relapse prevention and moderation management. Those who accept addiction as their choice can pursue the non-conventional path of acceptance. Through acceptance of your addiction you can decrease emotional pain and develop greater self-knowledge and self-prediction abilities. Through detaching a little bit from your own story (i.e. from the lies, excuses and denials you tell yourself), you can become better at predicting your own future behavior and start seeing consequences coming ahead of time. This strategy can sometimes help you avoid the worst consequences. Other times you can't avoid negative consequences, but seeing them coming ahead of time can still be empowering. A consequence you can see coming is a choice, and taking ownership of the choices we've made can reduce pain and suffering. All these principles can be merged together to help you with the task of becoming a better addict. What you just read is a very brief summary of the entire book. Though many resources exist to help addicts overcome their addiction, no resources that I know of seek to help addicts and users be better versions of themselves. That is the purpose of this book, to serve as a companion book for habitual users, functioning addicts and addicts who do not want to change.
