One crewmate was dead, the other seriously injured, and a ruthless enemy had quickly surrounded their ship-Bryant could only think of one place to run to and hide-the "abandoned" planet of Midway! But on Midway, the subterranean city he remembered from his youth was not as it once had been. Something was amiss. Complicating matters even further was the sudden appearance of their brutal alien pursuers. Soon his beloved city was being plundered by the enemy! With the realization that the planet wasn't uninhabited after all, Bryant knew he had to risk all-perhaps even his own life-to warn the natives of the danger he had brought to their world. But would they heed his call to action, or were they so certain that they were as powerful as Cosmic Kings? The second novel is "Lone Star Planet" by H. Beam Piper and John J. McGuire. The name of the planet was New Texas; the by-word of the people was independence, so the citizens of this maverick planet fought against the protective ties of the Solar League. And for Stephen Silk, League ambassador to New Texas, the job was twofold. Getting that pistol-packing populace to admit that they needed anyone's protection would have been a tough enough task in itself. But add to it the fact that Silk realized New Texas-as well as the rest of the galaxy-was in danger of a z'Srauff attack, and the job became impossible. It was pretty common knowledge that the z'Srauff were a race evolved from canine-like ancestors-and there wasn't a Texan alive who could be scared by talkin' dawg! But if Silk couldn't get them to act, and fast, there wasn't going to be a Texan alive, scared or otherwise. The whole universe would be going to the dogs!
