Mark Crilley se crió en Detroit, Michigan. Después de graduarse en Kalamazoo College, viajó a Taiwán y Japón, donde enseñó inglés durante casi cinco años. Fue durante su estancia en Japón que creó el cómic Akiko on the Planet Smoo, nominado al premio Eisner, que generó una serie de novelas gráficas y adaptaciones de novelas en prosa.
