His book In the American West (1985) is widely considered a seminal work in the history of photography. His works are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Fotomuseum Winterthur in Switzerland, among many others.

Richard Avedon fue un fotógrafo estadounidense nacido el 15 de mayo de 1923 en Nueva York y fallecido el 1 de octubre de 2004 en San Antonio, Texas. Es considerado uno de los grandes maestros de la fotografía del siglo XX, especialmente en los campos de la moda y el retrato.

Desde joven mostró interés por la imagen y la estética, trabajando como fotógrafo en la Marina Mercante durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. A su regreso, estudió fotografía en la New School for Social Research, donde fue alumno de Alexey Brodovitch, director artístico de Harper’s Bazaar. Gracias a esa relación, Avedon comenzó a trabajar en la revista, donde revolucionó la fotografía de moda al dotarla de dinamismo, movimiento y espontaneidad, alejándose del estilo rígido y posado tradicional.

Durante su carrera también colaboró con Vogue y The New Yorker, y retrató a figuras icónicas como Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Andy Warhol, y el Dalái Lama. Su serie In the American West (1985) es una de sus obras más reconocidas, mostrando retratos en blanco y negro de personas comunes con una profundidad psicológica extraordinaria.

Avedon combinó precisión técnica, sensibilidad artística y empatía humana, dejando una huella imborrable en la historia de la fotografía contemporánea.
