(Talca, 1950). Minero, escritor y poeta chileno. Sus obras están influenciadas por el realismo mágico y cuentan sus experiencias como trabajador en minas de salitre de Atacama, al norte de Chile. La contadora de películas ha sido traducida a más de quince idiomas y ha sido llevada al cine. Además de sus múltiples premios, en 2001 fue nombrado Caballero de la Orden de las Artes y las Letras por el Ministerio de Cultura de Francia y en 2022 fue ganador del Premio Nacional de Literatura de Chile.
