Mystery solved!At this point, you must decide two things. What fingering will make the notes flow more musically? You will need to determine where the note should be played to create the tonal quality the song requires. You will know which finger plays each particular note after this 3rd Position Study and the study of the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th Position Study Manuals as well.This is why the brain benefits from taking violin and music lessons. You have to play a part in the creation of the song. An A on the D string is still the tone of an A, yet the tone has a different quality, deeper and a little darker than an open A string. To me, it sounds mellow. The A string is a warm sound, but the D string is a deep mellow tone.
