Reseña del libro

This introductory textbook is ideal for students of linguistics and especially the history of the English language. Assuming no prior knowledge, and with clear examples and exercises throughout, the book charts the full historical development of English. The historical analysis begins by focusing on spelling and phonology, progressing through inflexion, work-formation, syntax, lexicology and semantics. A final chapter examines foreign influences on the language. Different versions of several Bible passages from a range of periods are printed in parallel in an appendix to enable the student to trace the complex development of the English language and to assess the changes outlined in the book.
