As of this publication, he stands as the only Speaker of the House of Representatives from North Carolina. Yet, he remains almost unknown to the public and historians alike.While serving in Congress, he became the "Father of States' Rights" and saw the sectional divisions in the country which exists to this day.But, he sought only to serve and return home to his farm work the land.
