In a large city in the north of Africa, a public functionary, chief of the rodent extermination department, fights against the millions of rats that threaten the city. Solitary, obsessive, and so sensitive it borders on paranoia, he devotes himself to his job in exemplary fashion. His life passes by under an extreme order; he does not leave anything to chance, and has the compulsive habit of writing down all his intimate reflections and secrets on small pieces of paper. This bitingly funny novel was a piercing critique on the author's part of a government suspicious of even the slightest hint of freedom of expression.
